Frequently Asked Questions

What is an XML sitemap?+

An XML sitemap is a file that lists all the important URLs on your website. It helps search engines like Google discover and crawl your pages more efficiently. It typically lives at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.

What's the maximum size for an XML sitemap?+

A single sitemap file can contain up to 50,000 URLs and must be no larger than 50MB uncompressed. If you need more, use a sitemap index file that references multiple sitemap files.

Is the lastmod tag important in sitemaps?+

Yes. The lastmod tag tells search engines when a page was last modified. Google uses this to prioritize which pages to re-crawl. Without it, Google has to guess which pages have changed.

What is a sitemap index?+

A sitemap index is a special sitemap that references other sitemap files. It's used when you have more than 50,000 URLs and need to split them across multiple sitemaps. The index file lists the locations of each individual sitemap.

Do I need to submit my sitemap to Google?+

It's recommended. You can submit your sitemap in Google Search Console under Sitemaps. You can also reference it in your robots.txt file with a Sitemap: directive. Google may find it automatically, but submitting ensures it's processed.
